Our History
Yuma hockey began as a vision to bring the sport of hockey to the Yuma community. In the early years, players practiced and competed wherever space could be found. Practices and games were first held at the Yuma Racquet and Fitness Club, and during the second year, the league moved to the basketball courts at the Optimist Center. Teams often had to be creative, finding any available place where players could lace up their skates and continue building the game locally.
A major milestone came in 1998, when the City of Yuma completed the skate rink at Kennedy Park, giving local players a permanent place to practice, compete, and grow the sport. Two years later, in 2000, the Yuma Youth Hockey League was officially formed. What began with a small group of people determined to create opportunities for local skaters grew into an established youth hockey program and a lasting part of Yuma’s sports community.
